A chat with singer and model, Sarah-Jane Thomas

Inspiring Females

We are inspired by strong, creative females who dare to take risks and put action to their dreams; despite what society deems to be the norm. In our first in a series of Q&A's we chat to Sarah-Jane Thomas. Born and bred in Cape Town, Sarah-Jane is a fashion and lifestyle model and a professional singer. She forms half of the female duo, G and T. Read on to see what she has to say about style, career and all the bits in-between.

How do you describe your style?

I go from Plain Jane to Beyonce extra in 1.2 seconds! Day-to-day I'm a jeans and t-shirt kinda girl. For shows and events I like to get creative but still keep it classy. Lately I'm enjoying dressing up pants/ trousers.

What is the best piece of style advice you've ever been given?

Find one great pair of jeans. The go-to pair of jeans where you KNOW you'll have your confidence on 1000! Also, to invest in the basics - leather jacket, leather boots, leather bag, black dress (LBD), sneakers, denims, a blazer, black heels.

Autumn is here - what will be your go-to item of clothing?

A blazer. I find it's a nice transitional piece for the changing season.

What is the oldest item in your wardrobe?

I have many! I'm definitely the "raid your mom's old wardrobe" type. My favourite vintage pieces are an 80's-style leather bomber jacket from my Mom, a lace body suit from my Aunty and a ring with a "S" on it from my Grandmother.

What was your last splurge?

I splurge more on face and body products. Skin care is my splurge thing! Way more than make-up and clothing. Clarins, Dermalogica, Lush, The Body Shop...

You haven't opted for a traditional career. What have been the challenges you've faced with this decision?

It's tricky when most of the world doesn't see your career as a "real job". Small things like getting a cell phone contract could be challenging for a freelancer. Also, no day is the same (I like this more than I dislike it though). Late nights and early mornings. Weekends mainly = workdays. Getting sick is a definite no-no when you're a singer. Finding the balance between "the show must go on" and the longevity of your career and looking after your voice is tricky sometimes.

What do you love most about the career path that you've chosen?

Honestly, I wake up every morning (even the 4am mornings) feeling grateful that this is my life. That I get to do what I love. I get to sing, perform, share stories and a bit of myself with whoever is listening. This makes me incredibly happy. I like having my own time. Shopping in the middle of the day with no queues is great! The odd Wednesday morning that I do get to sleep in is also gladly welcomed.

If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be?

Difficult question!! There are so many. If I could sit in a writing session with Ed Sheeran... man that would be a dream. Local talent, Youngsta CPT is creating quite a movement. I'd love to pick his brain!

Drink of choice?

Red wine or gin and tonic for the Summer days.

Tea or coffee?

Tea!! I have a collection and all the gadgets to go with it, as well as about four tea sets.

Favourite spot in Cape Town?

I live in Muizenberg so I'd be bias. But I love Surfer's Corner. It's great to ger away from the city and feel at "home". Also love love Kalk Bay. I love the people and the art. Handmade homemade is a vibe!

What's your one idea that all of us can easily start doing, to help empower and uplift our future female generations?

Educate. The future female generation needs to know how strong and powerful they are, Know your worth! Know your power. The more women stand up for one another and stick together, the stronger we are. Speak beautiful things into each other's lives instead of bad-mouthing.
